Watching dead people is one of my hobbies. On lazy Saturdays, I can do it for six hours at a time. I’ve noticed the women all wear one-of-a-kind garments.
I think I like watching these gorgeous men and women for many reasons. The now-dead actors and actresses in the old classic movies behave in ways I enjoy. I trust them to keep their clothes on, for one thing. If they need to remove them, they stand behind a screen or door for modesty.
They do not curse at one another. They don’t often blow up buildings or each other. When they do, they do it in a tidy way. If they feel they must kill someone, they do it with black-and-white neatness, even fastidiousness. I find this much more relaxing than the excessive details of blood and gore in today’s films.
One satisfying thing these dead people do is portray stories. They accomplish this with face-to-face conversations, not mumbles, grunts and sound bites. Their sentences are often strung together in soliloquys.
Amazingly, they have no need of the ubiquitous f-word used as every possible part of speech nowadays. If today’s screenwriters were paid by each unique word, their paychecks would be paltry. That one f-word saves them from finding and using thousands of other more creative ones.
Best of all, these dead actors listen to each other, with their faces registering emotions. Their stories are told with at least as much dialogue as action. Their eyes often meet and hold. I want to imitate these dead people, taking my eyes away from technology more often. Who knows what my eyes and ears may discover?
